Star Gathering Family Weekend

Sept 1 or 2 - Sept 4
This conference was formerly known as Laity Weekend

Conference Theme:
“The Bamboo that Bends is Stronger than the Oak that Resists"

Exploring the Capacity for Resilience through the Lens of Art, Poetry, and creative spiritual practice. Human history is a story of achievement and joy, of premature death and suffering. Natural disasters and wars, along with smallerscale threats to life and well being, have been ubiquitous, and humans always have had the task of managing responses to horror and fear. Religious beliefs and cultural rituals traditionally had specific functions of offering thanks for well-being and achievement, and of seeking relief from suffering. Throughout history, events 11 have often been framed in terms of individuals conquering adversity and surviving with resilience, triumph and progress. Our weekend at Star Island offers us an opportunity to reflect on our capacity for resilience and to try our creative means to strengthen our individual and communal resources. We will explore the power of our imagination, our intuition and gentle strength that comes from integrating body, mind and spirit. We will get inspired by reflecting on the art of Vincent van Gogh, Henri Matisse as models for resiliency before we venture into creating beauty through coloring mandalas, tapping into our imagination through guided imageries, bringing body, mind and spirit together in communal labyrinth walks, preparing for darker times of the year by creating our own resiliency candle and writing our resiliency psalms.
